Understanding Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025

 

The Indian government has introduced the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, dated 13th February, 2025, to ensure high-quality standards for furniture products.

Salient Features

  • Furniture items listed in the government’s notification must meet the Indian Standard specified for them.
  • They must carry the Standard Mark from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), confirming compliance.

  • Exports
  • Furniture manufactured in India exclusively for export does not need to follow these standards.
  •  
  • Small Businesses
    • Micro & Small Enterprises get an 18-month extension before compliance is required.
    • Very Small Enterprises (registered on the Udyam Portal) with investments under ₹25 lakh and a turnover below ₹2 crore (as certified by a Chartered Accountant) are fully exempt from this rule.

This order comes into effect 12 months from the date of its official announcement.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will oversee certification and enforcement.

Anyone failing to comply with this order will face penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
